Two new Crestabond grades of methacrylate primer-less structural adhesives, now available in black, have been added to the M7 (1:1) range.
Scott Bader has specifically developed Crestabond M7-05 Black and M7-15 Black in response to customer demand, particularly from fabricators bonding pigmented ABS and carbon fibre (CF) composite components. According to Scott Bader, these two new 1:1 mix ratio grades are in addition to existing black grades, which up until now have only been available in the Crestabond M1 (10:1) range. It says that, with the significant growth in applications now specifying CF to achieve a lighter weight, the need for a black pigmented adhesive system has significantly increased for the latest designs of finished composite parts now being structurally bonded in applications for motor sports, high performance and luxury cars, electric vehicles, racing yachts, and sports equipment, where aesthetics and finish quality are very important.
Scott Bader explains that the two new black coloured M7 grades added to the 1:1 ratio Crestabond range now offer manufacturers a colour choice of either off-white or black, which it says can be a significant application benefit to meet any aesthetic requirements in addition to bond performance. Both new black coloured grades are variants of the existing Crestabond M7 off-white grades in the range. They exhibit the same attributes, handling and performance properties including: fatigue and impact resistance; gap filling capabilities up to 5mm; with minimal surface preparation required prior to bonding. Crestabond M7-05 Black has a working time of 4-7 minutes and a fixture time of 18-22 minutes; where a longer open time is beneficial, the Crestabond M7-15 Black grade offers a working time of 10-20 minutes and a fixture time of 30-45 minutes. According to published Scott Bader technical data sheets available, both new grades have a viscosity of 30,000-70,000 centipoise (cP), and offer a tensile modulus of 1200-1700 MPa, with a tensile strength between 22-25 MPa, and an elongation of 33-35% depending on the specific grade. As with the rest of the M7 range, both M7-05 Black and M7-15 Black are suitable for bonding a wide range of popular engineering material substrates such as: FRP, Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Cold rolled and galvanised metals, ABS, Acrylic and Polycarbonate.
Depending on part sizes, complexity, quantities and the adhesive application equipment being used for bonding parts on the shop floor, Scott Bader says the Crestabond M7 range is available in a variety of pack sizes: 50ml and 400ml side by side cartridges; 20 Litre (nominal) pails and 200 Litre (nominal) drums.
