The overall investment is huge, amounting to 3.5 billion RMB. Upon the completion of construction by 2024, the new production base will contribute to an additional capacity of 12,000 tons 48K PAN-based carbon fiber and 24,000 tons precursor, reversing China’s reliance on imported carbon fiber as it claims, and consequently addressing domestic shortage of supply.

The new base will include 2 precursor workshops and 3 oxidation-carbonization workshops, with two 2,000 tons carbon fiber facilities in each.

SINOPEC Shanghai launches this program under the support of Shanghai government, together with tens of industrial and academia partners, including SINOPEC Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology, Fudan University, etc. By leveraging its unique strength in upstream acrylic fibers, it is expected to drive down the cost of carbon fiber production and industrialize its utility in various sectors.
